In an attempt to enter the personal computing space, Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries Ltd. is rumored to be planning to buy a major stake in Notion Ink – the Indian tablet maker company founded by IIT alumnus.

Notion Ink gained popularity when they showcased the Adam – their Android powered touch screen tablet which was then touted as the Apple iPad killer. Adam was scheduled to launch this year, but was delayed due to some reasons.

Key features of the Adam include:

  • 10 inch transflective LCD
  • 180 degree Swivel Camera
  • Dual-Core ARM® CORTEX (A9 MPCORE™ Processor)
  • Full High Definition Multimedia
  • Longer Battery Life
  • Dual Display
  • Ebook Client
  • 3G and WiFi Connectivity
  • Multi-touch Support.

RIL has also bought 95% stake in Infotel – the company which won a pan India WiMax license in the BWA auctions this year. The move to buy Notion Ink can be taken as Reliance’s long term plans to be an end to end provider in the telecom space. With Infotel, they will have a pan India WiMax network. With Adam, they will have devices which can be used over the network. In future, they might sell the tablet with bundled free usage plans.

  1. Hope this does not turn into a vapor ware with two extensions on launch since its announcement last year.

Looking forward to buying one soon.
