According to the latest report by Gartner, Android OS grew 888% last year to gain the second position with 22.7% share in Smartphone Operating Systems. Nokia’s Symbian went down from 46.9% market share to 37.6% but still stayed on top.
In overall mobile phone sales Nokia still stayed Numero Uno but again lost over 20% share this year. If this continues I expect Samsung to take over Nokia by 2012 despite their falling share. Apple jumped into Top 5 with a 2.9% market share. If the trend continues Apple will become the 3rd largest mobile company beating LG and RIM in the coming years.
This should be a major lesson for Nokia. Once they were the market leaders with a huge margin. They made the best hardware, the best software. They set the prices as they liked. But now, their hardware is not even state-of-the-art, no one talks or develops for their OS. 2011 is clearly a really important year for Nokia.
