If you hate Facebook for not launching “Places” in India and other countries (except US, UK, Japan), then join the club.
Although this article primarily explains its usage on iPhone(s), the same approach should work when Facebook releases Places for other mobile platforms such as Android, Blackberry – Your VPN Configuration would change.
So, You know where I am going?
Yes, if we find a way to get a US IP address – we’ve got our way to access Facebook Places.
Although it won’t be as fun as there will be very few people who’ll be using it.
Step 1: Configure HotSpot Shield for iPhone
Follow these steps
-
Go to Settings –> Network –> VPN –> Add New VPN Configuration
-
Fill out the settings as written below.
VPN Connection type: IPSec
Description: HotspotShield
Server: 68.68.107.101
Account: z0um4v
Password: z0um4v
Use Certificate: OFF
Group Name: hss
Secret: hss
Step 2: Turn the VPN ‘On’ from Settings
If you get authentication errors, keep retrying – It’s a free service and probably suffers a lot of load.
Wait for the iPhone VPN to connect (you would get a VPN icon beside the Wifi on the top taskbar) –
Check the screenshots uploaded in ‘Step 3’ below.
Step 3: Get started with using Facebook Places
If the VPN isn’t connected, you will receive the usual error that Facebook places isn’t available in
your location or that some other error has occurred.

You may not really like check-in(s) on Facebook yet as there are hardly any people using it in India – so you would be the first to add new places. Believe me it’s not fun.
But hey, it’s cool to use it in the first place. Impress your Facebook friends 😛

Well, I like it and hope Google has its own too and if you’re in a country where its not launched yet, here’s a tip on how to use Facebook places outside the US. […]
[…] completely within the app. The update also adds Places, that don’t work in India yet (here is a hack), and Groups, which work just as expected. There is one tiny thing missing though, I can’t […]
