Mobile Safari Gyroscope Demo shows the Future of Google Maps

While making their new iPhone app 360 Panarama, Occipital discovered that Mobile Safari can actually utilize the Gyroscope for navigation in some webpages. They created a demo that can be seen on your iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4G as long as they have been updated to iOS 4.2. Just visit the website occip.it/pt3dmqna from Mobile Safari to see the demo. You can move the device up and down and see the panoramic scene move as if you were actually moving your eyes up and down.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this was that it’s the future of Google Maps. Imagine an year from now they launch a new version of Google Maps (on Android I guess) which utilizes the Gyroscope in compatible phones. You fire up Google Street View and as you move the phone left or right or up or down, the image changes as if you are actually in that place turning left or right or viewing up or down. They’ll probably have to update the Street View database with more pictures but it’ll be an amazing experience.

Maybe in the future, the image will change according to the weather conditions in that location. That’ll be extremely cool. For now just visit occip.it/pt3dmqna from your iPhone 4 (or iPod Touch 4G).

  1. The latest GingerBread release added Gyroscope support for programs.

We'll be seeing more innovation on Android too soon, the hardware will come out first.
