Remember when Mobile Phones were a luxury? Remember how you used to care about them and got panicked when they fell down 2 feet? Those days have gone past.Nowadays, I drop my phone pretty much once a week. If that’s not enough, the phone has to go through smudges and scratches and splashes of water and dust every frickin day. Every time that happens I wonder why no one is making sturdier phones anymore. On the contrary, manufacturers like Samsung are famous for making phones whose parts come apart and fly off the moment they hit the ground. Apparently Motorola, with it’s somewhat solid and sturdy image, is coming up with a phone that may well start the trend. Don’t quote me on this, but it’s arguably the first smartphone (definitely the first Android-based one) that is made to, well, last.
Here are the primary features:
- Corning Gorilla glass 3.7″ (480×854) Capacitative touch display which is scratch resistant and designed to take those drops and bumps.
- Dust-proof and Water resistant body.
- 800 Mhz processor with 512 MB RAM and 2 GB Storage.
- 5 Megapixel Camera with LED flash.
- All the (now) standard connectivity options, sensors and an FM Radio.
- Android 2.1 with Motorola Blur interface (Android 2.2 upgrade supposedly on the way)
While the specs are pretty average compared the recently announced Dual-core monsters, they are pretty darn good for an average smartphone user. I’m sure this phone will run excellent once it’s upgraded to Froyo (Android 2.2).
So how sturdy is the phone really? While I don’t have a review piece, I looked around for opinions over the web and found out that it’s actually pretty good! According to Engadget the phone’s battery did die when immersed in water but the rest was ok. This definitely means that the phone can easily take more than a few splashes of water. The display is almost impossible to scratch and the body does pretty well to prevent dust entry. If you trust Engadget (or have way too much money to spare), you can actually throw the phone onto a wall and it will most likely survive the impact.
The best part is that the phone doesn’t look bulky at all. It weighs 118 grams and is 13.5mm thick. If you are looking for a sturdy smartphone, this is your only option. If you are looking for a normal smartphone, then too at around 18k it’s definitely worth considering.
