VLC for Android is Only Weeks Away

My favorite video player on Windows and Mac will be out on Android soon, in fact it’s just “a matter of weeks” according to Lead VLC developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf. That means the ability to watch any video on your Android device without converting it on the computer first. The people to benefit most from it will be Galaxy Tab (and other tablet) owners.

Apparently the reason for the delay is the issues faced in trying to port over the applications multimedia libraries to Android platform. Kempf told GigaOM that they had been working on an Android app since months but weren’t successful because of Google’s decision to offer Java-based multimedia libraries. With the help of new updated NDK, with which Google allows using native apps in Android apps, they have been able to create the modules for video and output. Porting the API for different hardware on different Android devices is still an issue though.

The progress of the project can be tracked on their GitHub page.
