Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt has mentioned in his Keynote that the next Android release “I” will combine Gingerbread and Honeycomb. Now it could mean two things. One, that the next release will just have features from both Gingerbread and Honeycomb and two, that the next release will merge the tablet and smartphone OS line into one. The second of course, is contrary to the popular belief that Google will continue run two parallel versions for Android smartphones and tablets. In my opinion, it’s the latter and that’s possibly the reason that Google is naming it Ice Cream Sandwich instead of Ice Cream.
Schmidt also said that Android will be moving to a steady 6 month cycle after this. While it’s great for the platform, it’s really bad for the consumers if the present release scenario continues. It will just mean that unless you upgrade to the latest Google phone every year you will most likely be running a version lower than the latest. If you buy from another big manufacturer make it two versions lower. If you buy from a small manufacturer or Sony then well, you are doomed anyway.
