Details of the upcoming solar powered rickshaw – Soleckshaw

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi (don’t bother clicking through, their site sucks) have come up with an eco friendly solar powered rickshaw for India.

There are 8 million rickshaw pullers in India and the Soleckshaw is aimed at reducing their plight.  The rickshaw will be driven partly by pedal and partly by electric power supplied by a battery that is charged from solar energy. These solar powered rickshaws are expected to serve as a carbon free alternative to manual rickshaws. Currently, the only upgrade from manual rickshaws is the auto rickshaw which runs on fossil fuels and is not eco friendly.

  1. It will be a failure for sure. Actual necessity on slopes and not when you can smoothly paddle. Also, why would someone as poor as a paddle rickshaw driver would invest in such a costly alternative?

    • What is the cost of solar power rickshaw? Does it really costly alternative in comparison to human drudgery?
