How many HD channels does your DTH provider offer you? Well, if you are a subscriber of Dish TV, you can put an evil smile on your face and bitch about the other DTH providers at this time.

India’s first & Asia’s largest DTH operator, Dish TV now offers 30 HD channels to its HD subscribers. The channels include:  Zee TV, Zee Cinema, Zee News, Zee Studio, Zee Caf , HBO, Movies Now, Discovery, National Geographic, Animal Planet, Zee Talkies, Zee Bangla, Zee Telugu, Zee Kannada, Times Now, ET Now, Cartoon Network, POGO, Ten Sports, AXN, MTV, VH1, WB, Pix, TLC, Ten Cricket, UTV Action, UTV Movies, Sony and Colors. Phew.

If you subscribe to all the HD entertainment channels on Dish TV, you will have to pay up INR 225 per month. To enjoy the world cup in HD, you will have to shell out an additional INR 150 per month. That’s a whooping INR 375 per month just for HD channels! You might think that its too expensive, but have a look at the HD channel list again and you will find that most of what you might want to watch is now covered in HD (except Star Plus, if you watch it).

This is undoubtedly a solid response to TataSky’s super competitive pricing of its set top boxes which led to lots of subscribers jumping to TataSky’s boat. Let’s see what the other players will do to respond to this. Because if they do not, they will loose subscribers, owing to low switching cost (thanks to TataSky’s aggressive pricing).

Here is what other DTH operators are offering in the HD space:

TataSky National Geographic HD, Discovery HD, Star Plus HD, Star Gold HD, Star Movies HD, Star World HD along with IPL in HD
Reliance National Geographic HD along with Cricket World Cup in HD
Airtel Digital TV HD National Geographic HD along with Cricket World Cup in HD
Sun Direct HD Tamil HD movies, Tamil HD songs, Telgu HD movies, Telgu HD Songs, Movies Now HD, Discovery HD, National Geographic HD and DD HD
Videon d2h HD Discovery HD, NGC HD, Movies Now HD, Travel XP, HD Active Music and HD d2h Movies

Time to switch to Dish TV?

  1. Giving DishTV HD box with Samsung looks like a Big Fraud.

I have taken Samsung LED TV 2 weeks back and fighting with DishTV customercare to activate it.

Installation completed 7 days back and they are not activating it till now.

called/sent mails to customer care 100 times, very bad response and no resolution yet.

And I came to know the 30 HD channels is also wrong. Not more than 5 channels r coming with HD clarity.

I blame both Samsung and Dishtv for their careless behavior towards customers.

  2. as far as i know that information is correct, only 4 to 5 channels(movies now hd,nat geo hd,dicovery hd etc)in india is true hd till date.HBO and star movies are the most awaited to be hd.I dont know how dish tv is claiming 30 true hd channels!

these companies …. easily fool people..one needs to be careful before buying

  4. Even if channels are upscaled from sd the can be called high definition. When you go to a video store and look up the blu ray section almost 70-80 percent of all the movies are simply upscaled and sold as hd , so there is nothing to bitch about. The fact is that dishtv’s acquisition of transponders makes it highly capable of transmiting hd channels so in the future dish tv will always be getting hd channels first..b as for t
ata sky they are pretty much floundering right now ..the only
thing they have to offer is star hd since its a sister company …this exclusivity cant last much longer if the star hd channels want to make any kind of
profit… So within a month or two they are going to have to provide these channels to other dth providers
the fact is that unless several transponders go on sale (very rare considering their value)other dth providers might not be able to broadcast anymore hd channels for several months if not years

    • I couldn’t quite understand the last part of your comment, but I would any day choose to watch fewer true HD channels over many upscaled stretched out of aspect ratio ones.
