Big TV HD DVR price dropped to INR 4990, may the price war begin

Reliance’s Big TV launched India’s first HD DVR set top box a few months back at a retail price of INR 7490. With features such as 160GB HDD, universal remote, recording and live pause and rewind for HD channels, it was the only HD DVR option for Indian consumers.

Soon after, TataSky launched their HD set top box (without recording feature) at a very competitive price of INR 2599, thereby inducing a price war in the HD set top box space.

Owing to no proper official communication and alleged lack of interest from TataSky to launch TataSky+ HD, people (including existing TataSky+ SD users) are loosing patience. In order to grab such customers, Reliance has recently reduced the price of its HD STB to INR 4990.

The reduction in price might also mean that TataSky and Airtel may soon be launching their HD DVR boxes, and Big TV, in order to grab perspective customers has reduced the price in advance. Whatever might be the reason, this is certainly good news for customers.

This entry price places Big TV as the cheapest and only HD DVR provider in India. Clearly, this price point will induce a price war soon.
