Factory Unlocked iPhone coming soon to the US [Rumors]

According to @ChronicWire, it’s rumored that Apple Stores in the US will start selling Factory unlocked iPhone(s) from this Wednesday (15th June 2011). This is news to rejoice for iPhone lovers in the US as they no longer need to signup for 2 year contracts.

All iPhone4 models – Black and White (16 and 32GB) would be available.

Also MacBook Air is rumored to receive the SandyBridge refresh sometime in June-July.

Where’s the iPhone5 Apple?

[UPDATE 14th June 2011] – It’s official now, the iPhone4 is available on the Apple US Store. The prices are USD649 for the 16GB and USD749 for the 32GB version. These are approximately the same prices for the factory unlocked iPhone(s) selling in Canada, Singapore (except for India where it’s around 100$ expensive).

Leaked iPod Touch Shows A Capacitive Touch Button [Rumors]

Thanks to the underbelly of the world, we have new rumors to chase every day. The latest amongst them is that of a leaked iPod Touch’s "blurry snap" showing a capacitive touch button (like those you see on the new Android phones) in the place of a hard button.

Having a capacitive touch instead of the currently "well-accepted" home button doesn’t make any sense, I agree with Gizmodo that this would be a huge inconvenience as it could get easily triggered while playing a game or while making a call. I so hope that the next gen iPod/iPhone 5 would offer much better features to this, NFC perhaps?

The leaked pictures also show that the iPod Touch model has a 128GB flash memory and was running iOS4.2.1 (internal build). Also the iPod Touch model seems to have a metal back(aluminium like the original iPhone2G) similar to the rumors of iPhone 5 (thanks for replacing the crack-able glass Apple).

Also Sony CEO slipped a word and mentioned that they’re supplying 8.0 MP camera sensors (like to replace the current 5.0 MP OmniVision sensors) for the iPhone and iPad(s). We wouldn’t be surprised if the next generation iPod Touch would get this too.

Whoever takes the horribly blurred pictures of leaked Apple proto-types, Would you please get yourself a better camera, I think a 100$ dumb phone takes better pictures than the Samsung Digital camera you have. And get ready to feel my wrath if you photo shopped this picture.

Facebook Phones By HTC With Dedicated “F” Buttons [Rumor]

Okay, so Facebook phones are real. Unless of course these images are fake. The phones are being made by HTC and have dedicated F buttons which probably launch the Facebook app.

The phones will run a customized version of Android (extra blue I guess) with special features like a homepage widget with live updating Facebook stream. The phones are rumored to have minimal storage and all the pictures you take are auto-uploaded to Facebook. They may also have always-on GPS radio for Facebook Places (my guess).

I guess Facebook is going full-on in the world domination plan. Damn you Zuckerberg, she probably didn’t mean it.

AT&T Accessory Sale Hints iPad 2 Is Coming Soon! [Rumor]

BGR has received some tips that AT&T corporate stores will start offering 50% discount on all iPad accessories from February 13. Generally AT&T never does that unless they want to clear up the stocks for a new model.

That means the new iPad is coming soon! We’ve been hearing lots of rumors about iPad 2 but no one knew when it is coming. I guess it’s the right time since Apple has already dumped the old ones here in India.

Android 2.4 Will Also Be Called Gingerbread [Rumor]

I guess this is the third time we are talking about Android 2.4. First, we thought it was Honeycomb. Since H follows G and Gingerbread was Android 2.3, it seemed like the obvious name. But turned out Honeycomb was destined for bigger things. Then we heard a rumor saying 2.4 was actually supposed to be called Ice Cream Sandwich. Not Ice Cream because it looks similar to Frozen Yoghurt but Android 2.2 vs 2.4 don’t. Yeah lame explanation I know.

The latest rumor, however, implies that Android 2.4 will still be Gingerbread. It’s the same as 2.0 and 2.1 are both called Eclair. The 2.4 release will only have minimal extras like support for dual core devices and such. The rumor comes from Viewsonic who is launching their smartphone called ViewPad 4 this April. They say that it runs 2.4 which is still called Gingerbread.

This could also be the reason that leaked Sony Xperia Arc was found running 2.4 but was later dismissed as a misconfiguration error. Oh and that Nexus S running Android 2.4 could be the result of the same as well.

I think Google should stick to Beta and Non-Beta. Releases and naming isn’t their cup of tea.
