iPhone 4G – Leaked

So, it just happened to be a regular day when an Apple Employee (I hope still) Gray Powell had too much to drink and left behind a well confiscated iPhone next generation phone (or its near production prototype) in a bar.

It’s a real deal for sure. The phone was working for a day before Apple remotely wiped it out. But it was too late, much before one of “the other drunk” guy in the bar opened the Facebook application and logged into as Gray.

The Gizmodo folks acquired the phone and ripped the phone apart to find out the parts neatly fitted and this doesn’t look like a prank/spoof phone, which does imply that this could be the model which is due to be released by Apple in June 2010.

The new things noticed were

A frontal camera – Glad we can finally video conference, Girls *Ahem* can use it as a makeup mirror too.
New phone design – the back of the phone is flat and no longer curvy.
Separate volume buttons instead of a single button as earlier – some say this could be used for a hard button for clicking pictures on the camera application.
Better battery life (5.25 WHr at 3.7V) – The one in iPhone 3GS was 4.51 WHr at 3.7V.
Fits well in your pant pockets and purses & possible doesn’t rotate on vibrate
Really unstable version of iPhone OS 4.0 – The camera app seems to have crashed a couple of times.
A mini printer – Okay I admit – I made up the last one.

There are several arguments that this could be a controlled leak to suppress the “possible” attention that HTC Incredible (Android based) might be getting.

We at woikr are happy if Apple finally treats “Android” as a pure competition. After all, competition is good.
Remember the old days when people used Windows mobile “not-so-smart phones” and said “wow” – You’d laugh at them now – won’t ya?

Although this sounds something which can happen to your neighborhood friend, this doesn’t happen very frequently with Apple – what with all the “secrecy” surrounding their product announcements. They’re really careful. Most employees aren’t even allowed to blog publicly. We just hope Gray gets to keep his job.

He doesn’t want to come under the fury of Steve Jobs.

Thanks Gizmodo & the “random beer drinking”, “latest iPhone finding” guy for ruining the “summer” surprise and possibly ruining the career of an innocent beer drinking, base band engineer. And don’t be surprised if you’re not invited to the Apple Events ever again .

We just hope some day Steve gets you. If I were you – I’d change my name and settle in .

We’ll just wait till summer to upgrade our iPhone(s) as it doesn’t matter – we’ll buy it anyway – It’ll just be better .

Video Chat on the next iPhone [Rumors]

While digging through the iPhone OS 4.0 files, 9to5Mac came across multiple strings and files that hint the inclusion of video chat on the next iPhone model. The content found indicates the presence of iChat like sound files and one-to-one as well as multiple client video conferencing features.

I personally never cared about iChat/IM apps on the iPhone since it just isn’t convenient enough. SMS is always better because it gives you time to type comfortably while the reply is coming but that could just be me.

Anyhow, the ability to video chat straight from your iPhone sounds amazing! Imagine going to a cricket match and getting your face painted and calling all your friends and family to show how you look. Or going to a Radiohead concert and showing it live to your friends. I know this can be done with Qik too but it’s just one-way. You can’t look at the smile on the faces when you show them amazing stuff. Or calling up your parents from your new apartment and showing them the view from the balcony. The possibilities are endless.

If it wasn’t Apple I’d probably wish for a standard IM protocol like Jabber so anyone with a device that has a Jabber client (most computers and smartphones do) can video chat with people having iPhones. But I know it isn’t happening. All I wish for is that they allow calls between iChat on iPhone and iChat on the computer. And they should launch an iChat for Windows and Linux. With the sheer number of people that own iPhones nowadays, It’d be a killer app.

This rumor gives me (and many iPhone 2G owners) a good enough reason to wait for the next iPhone. I just can’t wait for the Keynote where Steve Jobs announces this. Just imagine the kind of adjectives he will use.

iPhone 3GS finally coming to India on 15th March? [Rumors]

There are rumors that iPhone 3GS may finally be hitting Indian shores officially as soon (late?) as Monday 15th March 2010.

Apparently, the phone will be available from 4 operators – Airtel, Vodafone, Aircel & Reliance and will be locked to the respective networks for 1 or 2 years.

Based on past experience, it can be easily said that the phone will be priced absurdly high. We will not be surprised if the 16GB model is priced at around 30k and the 32GB one at around 6 – 7k more than that. For those who think the price is reasonable as there is no contract, note that that phone will still be locked to the network of the operator you buy it from. You just have the choice to select whatever plan you might feel like.

I believe this is Apple’s strategy to quickly get rid of whatever extra inventory they might have before the next version is launched in June. This is what all companies usually do – Sell surplus inventory to 3rd world countries. Been to music stores lately? Seen the buttload of international DVDs on the shelves? Its all part of the strategy to clear the DVDs stock to make room for the Blu Ray discs in the “developed” countries.

Lets see how many iPhone 3GS Apple manages to sell in India after their pathetic experience with iPhone 3G sales here.

Apple looking to buy EA! [Rumors]

I just read over at Kotaku that there is a rumor going around financial types that Apple is planning to buy EA! I believe Kotaku when they say it’s crazy, interesting and most likely meaningless at the same time. But what if it does happen?

Whereas Apple is known for all the innovations in the industry, EA is infamous for minting money out of recycling old franchises and publishing the famous ones again and again with minor updates. It’d be interesting to see EA being as creative and innovative as Apple. Maybe we’ll get more games like Mirror’s Edge (with a better story) and Dead Space.

On the bad side Apple might start forcing you to buy an iPod for all your Sims.

Anyway, I’m eagerly waiting!

Here are the current rumors floating around the web around the next gen iPhone:

Apple has increased next gen iPhone production – This might be true owing to the much hype the iPhone OS 3.0 has created.
iPhone to have FM receiver & transmitter – We would love to have this ability in the next gen iPhone. For many people, FM plays a key role in deciding whether to go for the phone or not. The added benefit of the FM transmitter will be truly awesome for listening to music in your car.
Video recording – This has to come. People have been asking for this and Apple must pay attention to this.
Auto focus in camera – Although not a nccessity, this will be a welcomed feature. This will let amateurs take awesome pictures using the iphone.
Magnatometer (digital compass) – I seriously doubt this one.
Voice control – Dunno what this is. If its voice commands, then yeah, bring it on.

iPhone OS 3.0 To Finally Bring Copy & Paste – This one has been leaked by Kevin Ross of digg fame. He says that there is a possibility that Apple might release the Copy & Paste feature in the upcoming iPhone 3.0 firmware upgrade. We are waiting Apple.
A premium App Store is on its way – This is because there are too many apps on the app store now. There are numerous apps that do the same thing. It is extremely difficult to find the best among them. The premium store will help users select the best app by providing them limited options which will be the cream of the lot.
Malwares for jailbroken iPhones – This may be inevitable. There are rumors that jailbroken iPhones are vulnerable to malware attacks. Go ahead. I ain’t afraid. Its not Windows. Norton/McAfee – you guys seeing this?

There are two major iPhone rumors floating around these days:

1. Introduction of background processes – This might come as a surprise, but yes, Apple might just introduce the very thing it made fun of when it explained the Push notification service in one of its keynotes. Here is what macrumors have to say:

By now, it’s clear that something is holding up the Push notification service. While we aren’t sure what the specific issues are, we’ve heard that as an alternative Apple is considering allowing apps to run as user selectable background processes. If so, this feature would likely come in the rumored iPhone 3.0 software update but would be limited to only one or two processes on current hardware. The next generation iPhone, however, would likely see less restricted background process support due to its improved hardware.

2. Next gen iPhone by June 2009 – AppleInsider thinks that the next gen iPhone might be launched as early as June 2009. Here is what they have to say:

The source of the June comment is not entirely clear, but appears to have come by way of Davis. That said, industry watchers generally expect Apple to take the wraps off its next-generation touchscreen handset in June, approximately one year after the iPhone 3G made its debut.

It all started when an iPhone case manufacturer XSKN posted details of a new case for iPhone Nano on their website. They also posted the following picture which further led to spreading of rumor on all the tech sites:

Apparently, they are now taking online orders for the case. This is probably a one of a kind situation where the protective cases of a gadget are available for sale even before the gadget is announced.

The interesting thing to note is that all this is happening a few days before Macworld. And being Apple’s last Macworld, people are expecting a lot out of it. Maybe this is the reason people are still buying into this rumor.

BigFlix starting game rentals soon?

There are rumors floating around that the ADAG owned BigFlix movie rental service in India is going to start game rentals soon.

According to an employee at one of the BigFlix stores, the service will be combined with the current movie rentals service and there will be no extra charge to rent games. Users can log into their accounts online and queue up movie as well as game DVDs. The same terms and conditions will apply for game rentals as well. The existing users of the movie rental service will be able to rent games without paying any extra charges. The service is gonna launch pretty soon (about a month).

If this is true, it will be a great news for gamers in India who are hesitant to buy game consoles owing to high price of games.

Snow Leopard Release Set For Q1 2009 [Unconfirmed]

There are unconfirmed rumors floating around that the next version of Apple’s Mac OS X, the Snow Leopard is set for release in Q1 of 2009. That’s like a month away !

OpenCL (Open Computing Language)

Apple getting into Search?

Popular tech blog Techcrunch suspects that Apple might be getting into the search business. Apparently, Safari’s 6 – 7% market share and the users of personal productivity tools through Mobile Me provide a lot of search traffic for Google via Apple’s servers and they might be thinking of milking it themselves.

However, since they are not hiring any search professionals, it seems that they just might be into developing some sort of an extra rosy UI layer on top of Google search results. Basically, the folks in Mountain View do not believe in the same stuff as those over at Infinite Loop when it comes to UI. Google’s interfaces are plain vanilla simple whereas Apple puts in a lot of eye candy. Apparently, the Google search results interface isn’t good enough for Apple. They might be building a more Appley way to present these search results to the users.

Another news which is running around is that Eric Schmidt might be leaving as an Apple board of director soon. Looks like Apple is not happy with the competition it is getting from Android.

Apple creating a netbook?

There are rumors that Apple might be in the process to create a netbook – A wireless internet access device with a touchscreen. Allegedly, the device will be bigger than the iPhone and smaller than a macbook. No official word from Apple yet, however, upon asking in the Apple quarterly earnings call, Steve Jobs said that “there are not a lot of them getting sold”, and “Apple’s entrance into that category is the iPhone”. Later he admitted that “Apple is going to wait and see how the category evolves” and further said “we’ve got some pretty interesting ideas if it does evolve”.

Apparently, an undisclosed search engine is claiming that it is getting traffic from such device. The company spotted web visits from an unannounced Apple product with a display somewhere between an iPhone and a MacBook.

Similar traffic was detected from the iPhone’s browser before it was announced. This probably means that the Apple’s QA team is testing the device.

However, it is all rumor at this point. So do not get goose bumps yet.
