Samsung ties up with BigFlix to offer streaming on demand movies on its Galaxy products

Samsung has partnered with BigFlix to offer on demand streaming movies to their Galaxy line of products. They have launched an app on the Samsung App Store called My Movies which users of their Galaxy devices can download to watch instant on demand movies from BigFlix.com. Currently BigFlix has about 1000 movies to offer and Samsung is offering the first 2000 hours of streaming to its customers for free, post which it will cost them a subscription fee.

I checked out the app and its as good as a free app can be. The app screws up the video’s aspect ratio and also crashed once while I used it for about 15 minutes on a Galaxy S2. Also, BigFlix doesn’t seem to have a good movie collection. Beware that some of them are inappropriate for children (and are very easy to spot as they apparently fill up the “popular” section).

Nonetheless, its good to see that we are getting such services in India. Now that 3G is a reality in India, people can actually use such services. If you have a Galaxy device and want to download this free app, use the QR code below to download it:

Google and Samsung announce the Galaxy Nexus

With probably the lamest concatenated name ever, Google and Samsung have announced the (duh) Galaxy Nexus, the next pure Google phone from Samsung. With Google’s latest Android version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the Galaxy Nexus features a lot of cool features and an improved UI. Check out the video:

This Is How Complex Smartphone Patents Legal Issues Are [Infographic]

Everyone who follows tech news knows that smartphone manufactures are neck deep in legal issues related to patents. It seems like everyone is suing everyone for one reason or the other. In fact recently, Google bought Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billions and according to pundits the primary reason is the vast amount of patents the latter have in their kitty.

This infographic by Reuters tries explaining who is suing whom for patent issues.

Still can’t understand what’s happening here? Neither do I.

Train late but woke up early? PYKA Solves Your Travel Woes

Whenever I travel by train I often rely on my phone alarm to wake me up at the scheduled arrival time. If you know one thing about the Indian Railways, it’s never on time. There are a probably gazillion reasons for a train to be late despite having no real "traffic jams", but hey – it still happens. Ever woke up early even though the train was a couple of hours late? And all we do is curse the railways and wait.

So this new service called PYKA solves your train travel woes by calling you (repeatedly)~~alerting you through an SMS (a call would be better I’d say)~~ a few minutes before the train reaches the destination. This is way better than a preset alarm.

To use this you need to send an SMS to register your mobile number, train number and the destination station code in this format

PYKA <TRAIN-NUMBER> <STATION-CODE> and send it to 92200 92200

Here’s an introduction video which surely cracked us up.

I think it’s high time Indian Railways had their own such service.
