style="text-align: justify;">HP officially announced a pair of webOS 2.1 smartphones and a tablet. The Pre 3 is the successor of Pre 2, the Veer is a tiny touch smartphone and the TouchPad is well, a tablet. If you are interested in any of these devices or just plain curious, read ahead for a first look.

HP Pre 3

At first the Pre 3 may look like the previous Pres, but take a closer look and you can see that HP has increased it’s screen size from 3.1 to 3.58-inches which has got a resolution of 480×800. But the shape of the device is still the same as it’s predecessors’. The larger screen size helps accommodate a larger QWERTY keyboard. It sports a primary 5 megapixel camera which can capture 720p videos and a secondary forward-facing VGA camera for video calling.

There is a magical feature in this device called as ‘Touch to share’ using which you can transfer data from one device to other by just swiping them over. Like for example, swipe a Pre 3 over a TouchPad while it is browsing and then boom, the url is transferred and the page is loaded on the Pre 3. It seems like you have to pair both the devices before-hand to use this feature.

It is a multi-tasking beast with 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8x55 CPU which is coupled with 512MB of RAM. It will have full support for HTML 5 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1. There will 8GB and 16GB models and it will support EVDO Rev A & HSPA+ 4G (AT&T, T-Mobile) as well as 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluteooth 2.1 + EDR, A-GPS and 1230mAh battery.

The second smartphone, the HP Veer is a small and very cute smartphone. It has the same basic shape as the Pre 3.It has got a 2.6-inch 320×400 display, 8GB of storage, 5 megapixel camera.

It has an 800MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 7230 CPU with 512MB RAM and 8GB of storage. It is set for launch around this spring.

HP’s TouchPad is a direct (and serious) competitor for Apple’s iPad. This is the same tablet that was much teased as Topaz. It will run on the webOS 3.0 flaunting a 9.7-inch XGA capacitive display with a resolution of 1024×768, which is same as the current iPad.

Under the hood, TouchPad houses a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. In comparison, the iPad has the Apple’s own A4 1GHz ARM and the Motorola Xoom has a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2.

The Touchpad has got only a front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera for video calling, with no secondary back-facing camera, while the Xoom has got 2-megapixel at the front and 5-megapixel snapper at the back and there is none for iPad.

webOS 3.0 is still unfinished, so the demo units were a bit laggy. But the webOS 3.0 looks like a proper tablet OS which is optimized to make the best use of the large screen with refreshingly simple UI. E-mail has got the similar multi-pane UI as iPad’s.

HP has added the Beats Audio sound technology (which is used in HP’s notebooks) for better sound quality. It has also got HP Movie Store to compliment the cool audio system, using which we can stream movies and TV shows.

The TouchPad comes with 16GB and 32 GB storage options. Network-wise, there are three versions, TouchPad Wi-Fi, TouchPad Wi-Fi+3G and TouchPad Wi-Fi+LTE.

Every time I see the new Aircel WiFi ad (see ahead), I’m so lost in the song that I ignore whatever they are saying. But this time I decided to actually find out what is it and is it any good?

Introduction

As I guessed from the advertisement, Aircel WiFi is a hotspot service. That essentially means it allows access to broadband Internet using WiFi on your WiFi enabled phone or laptop or tablet in certain locations where Aircel has installed their Wireless access points (also called hotspots). Its pretty much same as what you get at most new Airports and even certain malls and cafes.

All you need to do is goto a Aircel WiFi hotspot location, connect to the Aircel’s Hotspot (AIRCEL_SPECTRANET), register/login and browse as usual.

Availability

Aircel says the they have over 50,000 hotspots across India but the website just shows 5 cities namely – Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai and none of the cities has more than 50-60 hotspots. Maybe they meant 500. But I think it’s ridiculous to advertise a countrywide WiFi hotspot network with barely 500 hotspots. I hope they improve this with time.

Pricing

The tariffs aren’t mentioned in detail anywhere on the website yet but the FAQ says it’s Rs 15/hour which is pretty good in my opinion. It will be adjusted into you mobile’s prepaid balance/post paid bill.

If you are an Aircel user, you can get a free trial till Feb 20, 2011.

Limitations

512 Kbps is way too low.

While the homepage says unlimited downloads, the FAQ says they have a 30 MB/hour FUP (Fair Usage Policy – a misleading term for download limit)

It’s only available for Aircel mobile users but I guess that’s a fairly obvious business move.

Unlike what’s mentioned in the advertising, availability is really bad as of now. It may improve with time though.

Is it good? Should I switch to Aircel?

The only good thing is that it’s much more convenient to use on laptops compared to a data card or via tethering from your phone. Since the speeds are really limiting it may not be as attractive as various 3G or EVDO data cards or tethering options. For mobile phones, I’d much rather prefer the SIM’s 3G network provided you have the availability in your area. But if the website is to be believed the 3G availability is much better than Aircel WiFi. But if are using it you are on Aircel and don’t have any 3G options yet so if it’s available it’s definitely better than EDGE.

No, definitely not. At present, it’s not good enough a reason to move to Aircel. If you want to change mobile subscribers switch to a 3G enabled one like BSNL, Airtel or Tata Docomo.

I guess the best thing about Aircel WiFi as of now is this advertisement.

Remember when Mobile Phones were a luxury? Remember how you used to care about them and got panicked when they fell down 2 feet? Those days have gone past.Nowadays, I drop my phone pretty much once a week. If that’s not enough, the phone has to go through smudges and scratches and splashes of water and dust every frickin day. Every time that happens I wonder why no one is making sturdier phones anymore. On the contrary, manufacturers like Samsung are famous for making phones whose parts come apart and fly off the moment they hit the ground. Apparently Motorola, with it’s somewhat solid and sturdy image, is coming up with a phone that may well start the trend. Don’t quote me on this, but it’s arguably the first smartphone (definitely the first Android-based one) that is made to, well, last.

Here are the primary features:

Corning Gorilla glass 3.7″ (480×854) Capacitative touch display which is scratch resistant and designed to take those drops and bumps.

Dust-proof and Water resistant body.

800 Mhz processor with 512 MB RAM and 2 GB Storage.

5 Megapixel Camera with LED flash.

All the (now) standard connectivity options, sensors and an FM Radio.

Android 2.1 with Motorola Blur interface (Android 2.2 upgrade supposedly on the way)

While the specs are pretty average compared the recently announced Dual-core monsters, they are pretty darn good for an average smartphone user. I’m sure this phone will run excellent once it’s upgraded to Froyo (Android 2.2).

So how sturdy is the phone really? While I don’t have a review piece, I looked around for opinions over the web and found out that it’s actually pretty good! According to Engadget the phone’s battery did die when immersed in water but the rest was ok. This definitely means that the phone can easily take more than a few splashes of water. The display is almost impossible to scratch and the body does pretty well to prevent dust entry. If you trust Engadget (or have way too much money to spare), you can actually throw the phone onto a wall and it will most likely survive the impact.

The best part is that the phone doesn’t look bulky at all. It weighs 118 grams and is 13.5mm thick. If you are looking for a sturdy smartphone, this is your only option. If you are looking for a normal smartphone, then too at around 18k it’s definitely worth considering.
