How to: Upgrade and unlock your iPhone 2G to 2.0 in five steps

DEPRECATED: This article is about an older version of the iPhone unlock software. Please use woikr’s new guide to upgrade your iPhone to 2.2 and unlock using QuickPwn.

Update Aug 30th 2008: WinPwn 2.5 is released and can unlock and jailbreak firmware 2.0.2. Click here for details

The iPhone 2.0 firmware was released in July. Since then, we have been hearing a lot of positive reviews about the new features in 2.0 like Push email, App store etc. If you have an iPhone 2G still running on firmware 1.1.4 or older, it is time to upgrade.

The following step by step guide will help you to upgrade your iPhone 2G running on previous firmwares to be upgraded to unlocked (read pwned) iPhone 2.0 firmware. This is achieved using pwnage tools created by the iphone-dev team. The whole process is broadly divided into the following 5 steps:

1. Download required software
2. Sync your iPhone
3. Create a custom pwned firmware using WinPwn
4. Install the custom firmware created onto the iPhone
5. Restore iPhone settings using the backup created in last sync

DISCLAIMER:

This guide is provided as is. The process worked well for all of us here at woikr and many of our friends. However, follow it at your own risk. Woikr will not be responsible in case anything goes wrong.

System Requirements:

– Minimum 512 MB RAM
– Minimum 550 MB of free space on hard disk
– Windows XP or Windows Vista
iTunes 7.6 or 7.7 (If you have a newer version, uninstall it completely and restart your system before installing the older one)
.Net Framework 2.0

1. Download required software

For easy access, download the following in a single folder.

a. iPhone firmware 2.0.1 – approx 242 MB
b. WinPwn 2.0.0.4 (alternate link) – approx 24 MB
c. Bootloader version 3.9 – 128 KB
d. Bootloader version 4.6 – 128 KB

2. Sync your iPhone

Sync your iPhone with iTunes. This step is needed so that a latest backup of your iPhone is created (automatically) in iTunes. We will use this backup to restore the settings (Contacts, SMS, Notes, Mail accounts etc.) after the upgrade is complete. Please note that the backup will NOT keep the media on your iPhone. You will have to add the media again after the upgrade.

3. Create a custom pwned firmware using WinPwn 2.0.0.4

a. Install WinPwn 2.0.0.4:

– Extract the file winpwn_2.0.0.4_Setup.zip downloaded in step 1b.
– Run winpwn_2.0.0.4_Setup.exe from the extracted folder.
– Follow the onscreen instructions. Do not alter any settings.

b. Double click on WinPwn icon on your desktop. This is the icon with a pineapple logo.

c. Click on “Browse .ipsw” button in the left pane.

d. Browse to the download location from step 1 and select the iPhone firmware 2.0 file downloaded in step 1a. WinPwn will be non responsive for a few seconds. Do not worry, it is just validating the firmware file. It will also display some text inside the text area.

e. Click on the “IPSW Builder” button in the left pane. This will launch the IPSW Builder window. Make sure to select exactly the following options in each of the tab:

Applications Tab: Select Cydia, Installer 2.0 and Youtube activation fix.

Custom Images Tab: Do nothing.

Custom Payload Tab: Do nothing.

Advanced Tab: Select Activate iPhone, Enable Baseband update, Neuter Bootloader 3.9/4.6, and Unlock Baseband. Click on “Bootloader 3.9 file …” button and select the “BL-39.bin” downloaded in step 1c. Click on “Bootloader 4.6 file …” button and select the “BL-46.bin” downloaded in step 1d.

Partition Resizer Tab: Drag the slider to 512 MB. Please note that this is an important step.

f. Click on the “Build .ipsw” button located at the bottom left corner. It will ask you to specify a location to save the custom firmware file. Point it to the same folder where you downloaded the software  in step 1and click “Save”.

g. The above process will take about 5 minutes to complete. During this time, you will see some text on the text area in the WinPwn window. Also, a progress bar at the bottom of the IPSW Builder window will show the progress of the process. Once the process is successfully completed, it will display a prompt. Click on the “OK” button.

h. Take a deep breath. And don’t get goose bumps yet. There is still some work to do :).

4. Install the custom firmware created onto the iPhone

a. Click on the “iPwner”  button in the WinPwn window. A Browse dialog box is displayed.

b. Browse to the location where you saved the custom firmware file in step 3f. Select the custom firmware file. It should have a name like “Custom-iPhone1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Restore.ipsw”.

c. Again, WinPwn will be non responsive for a few seconds. Also, iTunes will be automatically closed if it is open. Once the process is complete, you will be notified by a prompt. Click on the “OK” button.

d. Put the iPhone in DFU mode (Device Firmware Update) using the following steps:

– Connect the iPhone to your PC and start iTunes
– Press and hold the sleep/wake button and home button simultaneously for 10 seconds
– While keeping the home button pressed, release the sleep/wake button
– Keep the home button pressed until you see an iPod cable icon pointing towards an iTunes icon on the iPhone screen
– iTunes will prompt that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click on the “OK” button.

e. Hold the “Shift” key on the keyboard and click on the “Restore” button in iTunes. A Browse dialog is displayed.

f. Browse to the location where you saved the custom firmware file in step 3f. Select the custom firmware file. It should have a name like “Custom-iPhone1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Restore.ipsw”.

g. This process will take about 10 – 15 minutes to complete. Be patient. iTunes will display progress bars saying “Extracting iPhone software”, “Preparing iPhone for restore” etc

h. In case you get error 1604 in iTunes, restart your computer and start from step 4a. In case you still get the error, restart again and start from step 3b. *UPDATE*

5. Restore iPhone settings using the backup created in last sync

Once the restore is complete, your iPhone will restart. Just after restarting, it will load BootNeuter and run some scripts. You will see a lot of stuff going on the iPhone screen. Do nothing. After all the scripts are executed, the iPhone will be restarted again and detected in iTunes.

Once the iPhone restarts, iTunes will detect it as a new phone and will ask you to restore from an old backup. This is the backup which we created in step 2. Select your iPhone’s name in the list and click on Continue. This process will take about 10 minutes to complete after which your iPhone will have the same settings it had before the upgrade.

Some users faced an issue with Mail app crashing after doing the settings restore. If you face the same issue take the following steps:

a. Click on Cydia icon on the home screen
b. Install the essential software
c. Click on “Search” and type “BossPrefs”
d. Select BossPrefs from the search results and tap on Install
e. Once the installation is complete, press the Home button to return to the home screen
f. Tap on BossPrefs icon on the home screen
g. Tap on “More” button on the top right
h. Tap on “Fix User Fir Permissions”

This should fix your Mail app issue. Your iPhone is now upgraded and unlocked to 2.0 firmware. Congratulations !

If you do not already have an iTunes account, set it up by clicking on “iTunes Store” in the left panel in iTunes and clicking on the “Sign In” button on top right just below the search box. You can now use the App Store on the iPhone to install new apps on your iPhone.

UPDATE:

In case you continue to get Error 1601-1604 in Step 4h, try the following as well:

– Make sure you are in DFU mode. Your screen should show up as blank, as if the phone is switched off. The screen showing iTunes icon with cable is not DFU screen.
– Change the USB port, make sure it’s not coming through an external hub.
– Reinstall iTunes and all other related Apple software.

UPDATE: (For Updating 2G iPhone to unlocked 2.0.2)

The new WinPwn 2.5 has much more cleaner interface. This time, we wouldn’t have to troubleshoot that much as we did for 2.0.1. Although WinPwn 2.5 is in beta this time, its still good to upgrade without any problems in the first time. For updating, you can refer to the pretty self explained article for experts at BigBoss and for beginners at iClarified.

Note:

In case iTunes repeatedly asks to restore your iPhone from a backup even after you have restored it from a previous backup after the upgrade, do not panic. Just hit “Continue” again and immediately unplug your iPhone. iTunes will terminate the backup restore process. Now connected your iPhone again and iTunes will detect it as a restored phone and will not prompt you again to restore it.

  2. @Pat,

Yes it is a flaw, but Apple has announced that it'll fix the coming month. Good news for us.. Frankly I never wanted to use the Password lock application as I don't want any extra taps. I am lazy 🙂

  3. OMG, i followed this guide and did everything step by step

the transition from 1.1.4 to 2.0 was successful but something went WRONG along the way. I've lost all my contacts on my phone book but SOME old SMS and pictures from album are still there. IM lost

CAN ANYBODY PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ASAP

  4. @Danny –

This usually happens if Step 2 (sync your iPhone) did not complete successfully. In such a case, iTunes will have an old backup from which it will restore your phone. The old backup might not contain all your contacts.

If you synced your contacts with your computer regularly with Outlook or Windows Address Book, you can try the following:

    1. Check if all the contacts are there in Outlook or Address Book

    2. Go to Info tab in iTunes

    3. Under Contacts, select "Sync contacts with …" option

    4. Select All Contacts

    5. In the advanced section on the Info tab, select "Contacts" under "replace information on this iPhone:"

    6. Click "Sync"

  5. yea… kinda realized that after a few unsuccessful syncs with itunes. Ive even upgraded to 2.0.2 firmware, and the phone locked up. good thing the new quickpwn can unlock and jailbreak 2.0.1. I guess i will have to get every single contact back one at a time….

    Thanks for the help Setu

  6. @Danny,

WinPwn 2.5 is out which can JailBreak and Unlock 2.0.2 firmware. If you can wait. <del datetime="2008-08-30T10:48:54+00:00">We at woikr will test this out and update the document.</del>

We've upgraded here at woikr, this version of WinPwn rocks big time, check the updated post for more details.

    hey

How to downgrade apple 2G 2.0.2 firmware to 1.1.4? Because 2.0.2 is really slow and most application don't work.

  8. hey setu whts up .i just upgraded my iphone to 2.1 but wne i plu in the iphone to my computer in itunes instead of 8.gb it shows 6.79 gb total space.how to fix this issue

  9. @semil –

This depends on a number of reasons.

    – First of all, the storage chips in iPhones (and all such devices) do not actually have the exact amount of space as mentioned. It is usually less. In iPhone 8GB it would be approx 7.4 GB.

    – Now, when we pwn the firmware using WinPwn, we specify a root partition size. It is a minimum of 512 MB. Subtract this from the above size and add some MBs for the apps and other content that you might have and you have close to 6.8 GB.

    Hope this clarifies.

  11. Hi guys,

I tried upgrading my firmware from 1.1.3 to 2.0 yesterday. It all goes well till step 4g, afterwards i get the 1604 error, ive tried everything in step 4h, but despite all this I keep on getting the same error. Whenever i retried this the phone was already in DFU mode, did i need to take it off this mode before retrying the step?

  12. i own a 2G 8 GB i phone. i recently upgraded from 1.1.4 to 2.02 using winpwn 2.5.

however my phone capacity has come down to 6.8 GB.

why is this? and will my phone capacity come down further if i upgrade from 2.02 to 2.1 ?

cheers and some help too !!

  13. Hey, I have an iphone 2G 1.1.4. I followed all the steps in your instructions, however, I got stuck with the error 1604 in iTunes. I tried reinstalling and starting over from step 3b and also tried changing the usb port… but nothing seems to work. Is there any explanation?

    Thank you in advance.

  14. @AuditiO –

This might have something to do with the original firmware you downloaded.

Since QuickPwn has been released and is way better than WinPwn, we suggest you use it to jailbreak & unlock your iPhone. The steps with QuickPwn are a little different than with WinPwn. Folks at Sleepers have a pretty good detailed guide which you can follow: http://sleepers.net/news/2008/08/19/quick-pwn-gui

  15. Hi Setu,

I am having an Iphone with 1.1.4 firmware running. Do you suggest me to upgrade directly to 2.1 or I should first upgrade to 2.0.1 , if so I should use the steps given on woikr. When I am in India if I have Airtel sim can I upgrade to 2.1 firmware easily or I have to unlock it seperately again, since I need to use it in Dubai and qatar.

    Please advice.

    AJ

  16. @Amit –

If you directly upgrade from 1.1.4 to 2.1, you will have to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone. However, if you first upgrade and unlock to 2.0.2, you will simply need to upgrade it using iTunes and you will be all set. You can jailbreak it if you want to, but you won't need to unlock it.

A few users faced some issues when they upgraded directly to 2.1 using WinPwn. However, these issues were fixed in QuickPwn. I will suggest that you use QuickPwn to upgrade to 2.1. You can find the detailed steps here: http://sleepers.net/news/2008/08/19/quick-pwn-gui

  17. Hi Setu,

Thanks buddy that was of great help, however which version of Itunes should I Install, Currently I have installed 7.7.1.11, Do I need to update the version to Itunes 8. Also have I to update the firmware using Itunes or seperately as in the method suggested by you.

One more question I have is that If at all any problem happens is it that the phone becomes useless or I can still downgrade and use it.

    Please advice.

    Cheers mate

    AJ

  18. @Amit –

If you are upgrading to 2.1, you will need iTunes 8.

You have to restore the firmware in iTunes first and then jailbreak and unlock using QuickPwn. you will need to download the firmware file to your local disk as it will be needed by QuickPwn.

Yes, you can always downgrade to a lower firmware and use your phone in case (touchwood) anything goes wrong :).

  19. Dear Setu,

Well you have mentioned that I need to restore the firmware in Itunes, How can I do that, I am sorry but I am absolutely novice in Iphone concept. I did buy since I liked it a lot becoz of the speed than any other touch screen phone.

Also do tell me that when I happen to come to India will the Iphone work in India without anny problem and can I get the official software installed onto it.

Also could you tell me where can I get really good games for Iphone.

recently I saw on internet that Windows mobile can be used on Iphone but it was a beta version, It was done by a Norwegian fellow.

  20. @Amit –

    To restore a firmware:

    1. Download the firmware from the links in this guide: http://sleepers.net/news/2008/08/19/quick-pwn-gui
    2. Connect your iPhone to the computer and start iTunes 8.

    3. Hold Shift and click on Restore on the iPhone Summary page in iTunes.

    4. Browse & select the downloaded file above.

Yes, once you upgrade and unlock to 2.1, your phone should work with any carrier in India.

There is no official software for iPhone from any carrier.

After you upgrade to 2.1, set up an apple account and use it to buy/download awesome apps from the official App Store. It will be installed with 2.1 firmware automatically and will work without any issues.

That Windows mobile on iPhone thing was fake.

  21. Dear Setu,

Your immediate reply was helpful and I really appreciate the same. However how does one create an online account with Apple is it through Iphone or Itunes tab inside iphone.

    Cheers,

    AJ

  22. @Amit –

    We are happy to help.

You can create a new account using iTunes by clicking on "iTunes Store" in the left nav and then clicking on the "Sign In" button just below the search box. In the dialog box which appears, click on "Create new account" and you will be taken to the required screens to create a new Apple account. You will need a valid credit card for the same.

  24. @David –

Yes you can. The steps mentioned above can also be used for the same. Just download and use 2.0.2 firmware files instead of 2.0.1.

  25. Hi Setu,

Thanks a lot for the confirmation, then I will proceed with the upgrade.. hopefully everything goes well… Thanks in advance … wish me luck =)

  26. Hi Setu,

I'm in big trouble, run into error 1604 repeatly, cannot restore back my iphone, what can i do?? I tried both winpwn 2.0 and 2.5, both can't help …

    please advice and help !!!!

  27. @David –

A lot of readers have reported this issue. This might have something to do with the 2.0.2 firmware you downloaded.

However, you can use QuickPwn to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone. The steps with QuickPwn are a little different than with WinPwn. Folks at Sleepers have a pretty good detailed guide which you can follow: http://sleepers.net/news/2008/08/19/quick-pwn-gui

You can also upgrade to 2.1 firmware if you want to.

  28. Hi Setu,

Thanks for the reply, I have tried many times, using the same method, make sure my PC requirement is met, and make sure I didnt miss out any steps. I even install and uninstalled my itunes for few times, but same error still come out…. anyway, I'm still trying very hard to troubleshoot this… hope it will works one day … 🙁

Anyway, you mean I can just upgrade directly from 1.1.4 to 2.1 using the same method? how about the Itunes version requirement? any changes?

  29. @David –

Yes. You can directly upgrade to 2.1 from 1.1.4 using QuickPwn. Use the steps in the link I gave in my last comment.

  30. Hi Setu,

Thank you very much for your support…. I manage to upgrade to 2.0.2 already…

i don't know how I make it … just now when trying to restore…. suddenly it reboot back to 1.1.4.. then I use the WinPwn 2.5 and go thru the whole process again and again.. then it works now …. dont know how to explain .. but anyhow, I get back my iphone already .. thanks for your help …

  31. Dear Setu,

Indeed a splendid job u doing..I went thru above response and bit confused…

I got a 2G jailbreak/upgraded to 1.1.4 by Ziphone.org . Can I now upgrade to 2.0.2 or directly to 2.1 firmware by following the above steps u suggested.???

I would appreciate on the same.

    Thanks

    Zubair

  32. Hi setu,

I have an iPhone 1.0.2 and I want to upgrade it. The firmware is 03.14.08_G. I had a friend of mine unlock it for me. Can you please help me here!

    (PC running Windows)

    Thanks

    Saurav

  33. Hi Setu,

I checked and found that the installer does not load properly. It starts and goes to 'Checking Sources'. It then crashes and goes to the home screen.

    Thanks for your help.

  34. My email is walkedthemile@gmail.com

ok i did upgrade iphone 2 g from 1.1.4 to 2.0.2 everything ok except the ipod

when itried to restore my video or songs pc suite say it did the transfer, but when went to see in my iphone nothing was there any help

  35. @Omar –

This is expected behavior. As I mentioned in step 2 that media will NOT be backed up, you will have to add the songs and videos manually again to your iPhone.

  36. Hello Setu,

I have the same problems as Saurav does. Can you please help me as well. I don't want to do anything until I know my phone will be ok. I have the same version he does, and I want to install the newest version I can.

    Thanks for all your help!

  37. There is no mention to 'Virginize' the iPhone 1.0.2 to fix any possible baseband damage that could have been caused due to earlier unlocking methods.

    Any help !!

  38. I want to upgrade, but I am not sure of the following things.

I would like to upgrade my jailbroken iphone 1.0.2 to 1.1.4, but have the following problems:

    1. Not sure if the phone was unlocked using iunlocker or anysim?

    2. Installer does not work, actually I managed to get it to work, but it seems impossible to upgrade it past version 1.7 (beta), which does not allow me to put in source updates. When I click on unistall, it says I have installer v3.11 installed, but it has no button to uninstall.

    3. Ibrickr does not work for me, it actually never has. Everytime I try to install something, it just does a soft-boot and nothing is ever installed, or even shows up anywhere.

    Please help me!

    Thanks,

    Tony

  39. I just buy an unlocked iphone 2G currently running version 2.1 (SF136).

When the new version 2.2 comes out, can I update it without WinPwn just by connecting to itunes and going in DFU and restoring it with a downloaded ( I mean previously made) 'custome.restore' file??

  40. Setu,

Yes, I know, that is why I left the same message on that forum too. I don't mean to be a pain, but I don't want to mess things up. I just need to know how I find out if Iunlocker or Anysim was used?

    Thanks,

    Tony

  41. @Tony –

If installer isn't working, you can try upgrading to 1.1.4 without re-virginizing. Use ziphone to unlock the phone.

Then, upgrade to 2.x using this guide.

  42. Good Mroning Mr.Setu,

I had tried to upgrade my 2G iphone( firmwire 1.1.4) to firmwire 2.0. After the process, the itunes shows that the sim card in the iphone to be changed with the other carrier. My iphone is not working now. Please help me to recover either back to unlocked iphone 1.1.4 or unlocked iphone 2.0.

    Thanks in advance .

    Muns

  43. @Muns –

Did you unlock the phone using QuickPwn? You need to unlock the phone before you can use it with any carrier other than AT&T.

  44. Dear setu,

The previous guidance given by you was really helpful, however I want to know that while I am browsing through safari, some flash plugins do not work like in I get a question mark with a cude icon, what should I do to resolve this problem.

    cheers,

    Amit

Its working fine except that with my Vodafone sim I am unable to access internet eventhough I have EDGE activated. It used to be fine with 1.14 before I upgraded. However, EDGE network is working fine with Airtel sim. Since there is no edge setting in 2.1, how do I use edge here with my vodafone sim. I do not have wifi in my PC and hence cannot use WinSCP either. Please help!

  52. Hi,

I have tried many times to enable DFU mode on iphone, but it vain. The iphone has a firmware 1.1.2 and the itunes version is 7.6.1.9

    Please advise.

    Thanks, David

  53. I used quickpwn to unlock/jailbreak my iphone 1.2 to 2.1 successfully using iClarified's steps. It took only about 40 minutes and did not face any problem at all…

  54. Hi Sethu I have a question can I upgrade my jailbroken, unlocked 1.1.3 iphone to 2.0.2 using winpwn? or quickpwn is better.. also will I loose all my data if I choose to upgrade?

  55. @Arun –

I would recommend QuckPwn as its newer and has fewer issues.

For 1.1.3 to 2.0.2, you will have to restore and then unlock. And yes, you will loose all your data. But you can always backup in iTunes (just sync before starting the process) and restore from the backup once you have upgraded.

  56. hi,

i'm having an apple iphone 2g with fimwire 1.1.4(4a102), my model number is ma712ll,

i wanted to upgrade my iphone since i'm the new user of iphone and dont have any idea about it, can u suggest me the solution,

  57. hi Mr. Setu

I recently bought an unlocked 3g running 2.1 from US, i was reading the instructions of quickpwn, and did as it said but then, my iphone is stuck on emergency calls (no outgoing calls)only(incoming still works!!) and the itunes8 refuses to recognise the sim im using an Airtel pune sim card. it is locked. how do i get it back to life??

    thanks in advance !!

  58. @clyde –

If your phone was already unlocked, you do not need to unlock it again. It should work with any network seamlessly.

If you want to upgrade to 2.2, simply update your iPhone in iTunes 8 and you should be all set.

If your phone is screwed up right now, try restoring it in iTunes. Let us know how it goes.

  59. @Manoj –

Just follow the steps in the guide above and you should be all set.

It seems there is some issue with your headset. Try using a different one from a friend to confirm.

  60. hi,

    thanks for ur advise,

i wanted to know that how will i come too know whether my iphone is jailbreak or not, i know that it is unlock, but dont know whether it is jailbreak or not.

  61. @Manoj –

If you bought an unlocked iPhone 3G from an official apple or AT&T store, then if will not be jailbroken. It will just be unlocked. And you should be able to upgrade to 2.2 directly using iTunes latest version.

You do not need to jailbreak it to upgrage to 2.2.

  67. Dear Mr. setu,

I baught my wife an I Phone. She Complains she is unable to Forward the received messages. Th phone was baught fro UK. Its been Jail Broken by one of my Friends in Delhi.

Everytime i Connects it to Itune it says upgrade to 2.02 Version. What should i do And How. Kindly help me pleaseee,

    regards

    Rohit Pande

  68. @Rohit,

The iPhone's SMS'ng software (that comes with the firmware) doesn't allow you to forward selective messages. But there are third party software like iSMS (http://code.google.com/p/weisms/), You'll need to keep a check on their website as they're trying to port this to v2. (*Caution:this require you to jailbreak the phone).

Regarding upgrading your firmware to 2.02 version. You can upgrade the newer 2.2 version instead.

Follow the steps in this blog post. You should be good. If upgrading from 1.x.x and your phone still shows "Invalid Sim". Use QuickPwn to unlock and jailbreak it.

  69. Hi Guys,

I have iphone 2G almost one of the earliest firmware. I jailbroke it and was using it fine even thought the sound is kind of very low. After that i wanted to solve this sound problem and upgraded to 1.1.4 and the tried some third party apps also for sound enhancement. Nothing worked and after some days my cam is also spoiled. I am not sure if it is a prob of some third party app or lens. Can anyone help me solve these issues? atleast any one of the problems 🙂

  70. my 2G iphone bluetooth and wi-Fi is not avaiable and i have upgrade my iphone to 2.1 and it is not yet avaiable

  71. Hi Setu,

I have a 2G iphone that currently runs 2.0 firmware. I have updated my itunes to version 8 so that i am able to update my firmware to 2.2. As I plug in the iphone it starts to back up and then half way through restoring it sends an error message and that cancels the whole process. The iphone was purchased from the states and a friend over in the uk upgraded it to 2.0. My wife's UK model iphone had no problems updating to 2.2 firmware

Please advise how I am able to upgrade my software to 2.2?

    thanks

    Kam

  72. I upgraded my iphone 2G ver 1.1.3 to 2.2 in 10 mins on a winXP PC!!

    1. Ensured that I had, backed up my data from within itunes, had the correct 2.2 ipsw file, BL files- 3.9 & 4.6, quickpwn 2.2, iliberty+ in one folder on the desktop & had installed itunes 8.0.2

    2. Flashed my BL to real 3.9 using iliberty+ ( I had flashed it earlier, if you haven’t, then skip this step), from the fake blank that I had

    3. Ensured that all apple services are running & terminal service was also running (from within services.msc in windows)

    4. connected iphone to PC & launched itunes 8.0.2

    5. Clicked shift+restore & browsed to the “iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore” file from the folder I created, itunes will run your phone into recovery mode automatically

    6. It’ll evaluate & consume some time in it, then there’ll be a few stages: “preparing iphone for restore”, “preparing the software for restore”

    7. It’ll restart a couple of times & come to a screen where it’ll say “emergency calls only” & itunes will start automatically connecting to itunes store- cancel it in itunes & close itunes

    8. open quickpwn, select the same ipsw file, BLs…next …next & then select all that applies- cydia, installer 4.0, boot logos, activate

    9. let quickpwn do its thing!! it’ll take time & don’t worry

    10. it’ll restart & recognize the sim card in it

    11. reconnect to itunes, it’ll ask you if you want to start afreash or restore the back up, choose what you want &

    ….ENJOY!!

  73. My iphone 2g bluetooth and the wi-fi is showing on avaiable and these started since the day i upgrade my fone last

  74. My iPhone 2G was running on 1.1.3 was unlocked using ziphones 2.4 and was working absolutely fine. Then suddenly I thought of upgrading it to 2.0. I used the above guide to unlock the phone but unfortunately it didn't work. It always threw some 16xx error and nothing happened when I tried to place the custom image. Then I tried putting the normal ipsw of 2.0 and it worked perfectly fine but makes the phone inactive and unlocked. I tried to install the custom image again but got the same error.

So, I tried to install iTunes 7.5 and downgrade back to 1.1.4 and unlock and activate it using Ziphones 3.0 that activates the phone but no network signal, WiFi …

Can anyone please suggest what to do and how to fix the phone.

  75. An using an Iphone 2G jailbreaked 1.14 is there any adavntage of upgrading the firmware to version 2.2 and unlocking/jailbreaking againor should i stick with 1.14 Thanks for any advice.

  76. @John –

The biggest advantage is the App Store where you can purchase awesome apps and super cool games for your iPhone.

Apart from this, there are a number of bug and security fixes in addition to UI enhancements.

And of course you are missing out on latest of the jailbroken apps like Copy Paste Clipboard apps.

In case you plan to upgrade, use QuickPwn. Here is the link: http://woikr.com/apple/iphone/how-to-upgrade-and-

  82. Hey Setu.

Your explanations and examples have been the easiest so far.

Was just given a 2G iphone firmware 1.1.2 and am wondering if i should just follow your instructions above and upgrade to 2.2 using the methods described above.

Any risks or is it just safe to do what you have illustrated above?

I followed your guide and upgraded my I from 1.1.4 to 2.2, unlocked it and jailbreak as well. Now the only issue is that my edge has been disabled :-(. My carrier is Vodafone. Any reason why did this happen and is there any way to get out of it without downgrading it…

  85. I have an iPhone 2G. When I attempt to enter DFU mode and connect to iTunes, it asks "iTunes must check the iPod software update server to identify this device," then I get "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. An known error occurred (2001)." Then, iTunes won't recognize the iPhone. Thoughts?

  86. I was wondering if this tutorial and the iclarified tutorial works for Canadian residents, because I read a comment on iclarified's tutorial that it didn't work for them since they're not in the states. I'm worried. I don't wanna start this if my sim card isn't gonna be recognized. Please help.

  90. Hi, first I want to thank the Dev-Team for their great job !! I live in Japan and use the Softbank carrier. My I-Phone is the 32GS with 3.1.2 and unlocked and jailbroken with Blackrain and Blacksnow (Windows). Problem is, for the 3rd time in a few months, my phone suddenly stops working. It suddenly freezes and if you restart it then the only thing you see is the white apple mark with the phone that for hours tries to restart itself (and it won't). Until now I had no problem, I just restored it and then I just had to jailbreak and unlock it again….If I try to RESTORE it now I have only 2 choices from I-Tunes : (1) restore and UPDATE (which automatically updates to 3.1.3 doh) or (2) cancel (which of course means you keep your broken I-Phone) Can somebody give me a good advise on what to do please ?? I'm quite desperate…

  91. Hi,
