The next major Android release called Gingerbread (v2.3) will apparently be released in the next few days. It was mentioned by @kron0x who, as per his LinkedIn profile, has a Leadership and Usability position in Android Open Handset Alliance. Which simply means that we trust him on this.
It was apparent that Gingerbread is coming soon after we saw this Gingerbread installation video but I did not expect it to be released on Nexus One so soon!
Some confirmed features of the Gingerbread release include support for WebM video playback, improved copy-paste and social networking features. The other unconfirmed/rumored features include a revamped UI, in-built video call support, an Android Market Music Store, media streaming capabilities, 3D games Google TV support.
All you Nexus One owners, it’s time rejoice and mock those Samsung and HTC lovers.

The challenge would be to run HoneyComb (3.0) on Nexus One.
GingerBread (2.3) would be an intermediate release before the larger/Tablet-ready Android 3.0.
Last I heard they removed that difference. 2.3 is a major release now.
There will eventually be a 3.0.. Which features go where is something that we'd have to wait and see.
This is the problem with closed-source development (although it's open sourced later)!
I understand that they do it for competitive reasons.
