State owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigan Limited has launched it 3G services in Delhi under the brand ‘Jadoo’. The services are available starting today to MTNL subscribers in the NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Corporation) area, and will soon be expanded to the entire Delhi and NCR region.

The press release says:

Latest technological trends in wireless technology with services at lightning speed, are now available at finger tips with MTNL’s 3 G Jadoo. Video streaming applications like “Live TV”, movie downloads etc, high speed data download on mobile phone have become a reality for the Delhites, with MTNL beginning the commercial public offering of MTNL 3G Jadoo services today. This service will also enable customers to see their caller LIVE on screen. Also, customers can make overseas calls using VOIP technology at as low as Rs 3 per min from mobile to more than 100 countries including Europe, USA, Canada.

Mr. R.S.P Sinha, Chairman and Managing Director, MTNL while offering the services to Delhites said “MTNL has been pioneer for introducing latest technology services to its customers. We have earlier launched IPTV, VOIP and latest technology ADSL 2+ broadband services as first telecom operator. Now MTNL is the first company to launch 3G mobile services for our esteemed customers. We will continue our endeavors to provide latest technology advancements to our customers’ at most affordable prices.”

The tariff for the service is pretty high with activation charges of INR 500 + taxes, a monthly rental of INR 599 and call charges as follows:

(per min) Own network
Other network STD ISD
Voice calls 0.60 1.00 As per Budget plan
Video calls 1.80 3.00 3.75 30

In addition to the above charges, you have to shell out INR 149 per month extra as rental if you want to use 3G data service. And that’s not all. They will charge you INR 5 for each MB of data you transfer over 3G. That’s insane!

I guess the best bet is to wait for private players to enter the 3G arena and wait for the tariffs to go down.
